Echinocactus grusonii

Common Name: Golden Barrel Cactus

Echinocactus grusonii, commonly known as Golden Barrel Cactus has brilliant yellow spines cover these incredible specimen plants that can grow slowly to valuable specimens that weigh hundreds of pounds. Younger plants are usually single globes, however older specimens usually start pupping at the base, slowly forming striking clusters of gold. Yellow flowers that would normally have a lot of interest of their own are almost lost in the brilliance of the yellow spines, occurring in spring and summer on mature plants. Full sun, good drainage, hardy to low 20s. Extra water and fertilizer are greatly appreciated with shiny growth and brilliant spines during hot weather or in hot desert climates.
