Opuntia rhodantha, commonly known as Snowball Cactus. Snowball because white is an incredibly rare and unique color in the “prickly pear,” or “paddle” family of cactus. And yet, this beautiful low grower forms mounds of up to 2’ wide of golden spines, adorned with the most beautiful and delicate white flowers you’ve ever seen! Flowers in Spring. This mountain variety is completely winter hardy to sub-zero temperatures, but seems to be at home in most climates from highlands to lowlands, and even along the California coastal plain. Appreciates some summer watering 2 or 3 times a month during the hottest parts. Trouble free, easy to grow.
