Ferocactus wislezenii
Ferocactus wislezenii, commonly known as Fish Hook Barrel. Each main spine emerging from the areoles along the heavy ribs are perfectly hook shaped, broad, and heavy. The shape of the plant when younger is more globular, but older specimens achieve a thick columnar form up to over 4′ tall. Each spring and summer, the top is crowned with a ring of interesting yellow flowers that change towards red as they age each day. Later, large, puffy, light yellow/green fruits are formed that are full of masses of small black seeds. Spines are grayish yellow. This is an heirloom plant that can achieve great age, and can be handed down from generation to generation. Full sun. Must have good drainage, especially on the coastal plain where it is cooler. Great as a specimen potted plant; hardy to low 20’s. Will die indoors, although the process is slow. Appreciates some extra water and fertilizer during the hot summer months, but always allow brief dry intervals between waterings.
